Tracking special campaigns can be quite difficult to do when you’re in affiliate marketing.
Often as affiliate marketers we are using multiple networks and promoting offers from multiple suppliers. So what happens when you want to track a promotional effort over a period like the holidays?
Recently we ran some experiments over the Thanksgiving period and were happy with how things went with regard to tracking out campaign using our affiliate link management plugin, ThirstyAffiliates.
Step 1 – Create unique links
First of all, because we are using an affiliate marketing tool we are able to create as many affiliate links in WordPress as we like quickly and easily.
Each of the affiliate networks that we were promoting were running specials, so we decided to setup some Black Friday/Thanksgiving affiliate links to use for the promotion.
Instead of just using our regular links for these affiliate programs we decided to create separate affiliate links for these because they were often using particular link codes in the affiliate links.
We’ll also be able to use these links again next year which means we can track how the same campaign goes over different years all using the same links.
Step 2 – Create a separate category
The second step was to create a special Black Friday promotional link category.
Each of the affiliate links in our promotion were added to this category which means we are able to quickly pull out the links related to Black Friday/Thanksgiving using the category filter.
Step 3 – Create child categories
Next we created a number of child categories to sit under the main Black Friday category.
We were promoting things like WordPress themes, Hosting, and other things related to our niche, but there were multiple suppliers under each of these categories.
For example, there were two hosting companies running great specials so we grouped them together under the Hosting child category and there were three WordPress theme companies doing specials so they went under the Themes category.
This is great for organisation and is one reason why ThirstyAffiliates helps to keep your affiliate marketing organised.
Step 4 – Reporting and Statistics
Besides just organising our affiliate links into separate categories and keeping ourselves organised year after year in this seasonal promotion, we also have another reason for doing it.
Reporting on the clicks on your affiliate links is an addon that is available to Premium and Professional customers. If you’re on Standard you can also download separately it here.
With the Stats addon means you can track clicks by category. Are you seeing the genius behind this yet?
Because we have organised our links in a smart way, by having the parent category of “Black Friday / Thanksgiving” and grouping links under that with child categories like Themes and Hosting, I can now report on the statistics for the whole campaign as a whole by looking at the stats for the parent category or I can just report on specific parts of the campaign.
You can of course also report on individual links under the campaign by viewing stats for that link alone.
Be Organised While Getting Amazing Insight With Stats
The first great thing about tracking your special affiliate marketing promotions using ThirstyAffiliates is the ability to re-use links again next time you have a promotion. It’s perfect for season campaigns like this.
Secondly, the link categories functions of ThirstyAffiliates goes beyond mere flat categories that other link tools have. You can organise yourself into tiers of links which helps for those really hairy campaigns where there are lots of links and lots of companies that you are promoting.
Lastly, you can take this organisation and category separation of links into your statistics and see exactly what offers are performing well in your promotion. If you set it up like we did, you can even report on how your campaign is doing as a whole.
This is amazing insight and it’s available to you right now with ThirstyAffiliates.
